How to use the result

Publish your sitemap in three steps

1

Upload sitemap.xml

Download the file and upload it to the root of your site so it opens at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Many CMS platforms build one for you, so check before you replace it.

2

Point robots.txt to it

Add the Sitemap line shown above to robots.txt, or build a complete file, with AI crawler rules, in the robots.txt Builder.

3

Submit and monitor

Submit the sitemap URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Then run the AI Visibility Scanner to confirm crawlers can find it.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is a sitemap.xml file?

A sitemap is an XML file that lists the pages on your site you want search engines and AI crawlers to find, with optional dates for when each page last changed. It does not guarantee indexing, but it helps crawlers discover new and deep pages faster, especially on new sites with few links.

Where do I put my sitemap?

Upload sitemap.xml to the root of your domain so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Then add a Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit the URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Our robots.txt Builder adds the line for you.

Do priority and changefreq still matter?

Google has said it ignores both values and relies on lastmod when it is accurate. Bing and some other crawlers may still read them, so they do no harm. The most useful thing you can do is keep lastmod honest: only change it when the page content really changes.

How many URLs can one sitemap hold?

Up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites split their pages across several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file. This generator warns you when you pass either limit.

Which pages should I leave out?

Leave out pages you do not want in search: thank you pages, carts, account and login pages, internal search results, duplicates and anything marked noindex. Only list the final canonical address of each page, on one domain, with https.

Is my list of URLs stored anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Your last list is kept in this browser only. Share links put the settings after the # sign in the address, which never reaches our server, so very large lists are too big to share and should be downloaded instead.
